The unsuspecting woman named Bunmi gave him one of her kids' flip flops and when he requested for food, she got him chin chin, a small, sweet, and crunchy fried snack popular in Nigeria.
For her kindness, Zachery offered her $1,000 (over N1 million), which she turned down and would later accept amid a frenzied reaction. When Zachery asked Bunmi why she helped him, she replied:
"When I came to Canada as a single mother, my neighbour there...She helps me. My neighbour there, they helped me. Even my pastor in the church. They helped me."
Bunmi, who sells food to make ends meet, told Zachery she was struggling to cater for herself and her kids and risks being deported to Nigeria.
"I am struggling a lot. We need this money. I was working as a PSW before. They wanted to send me and my children back home.
"They said we should pack our bags. That we are going back home. Nigeria is not safe for me and my kids. I keep begging for food. Even I can't afford clothes."
So far, the fundraising Zachery launched, with a $100,000 (N154 million) target, has received $41,500 (over N63 million) in donations.
